ABSTRACT

Bronchiolitis or bronchiolitis obliterans are general terms used to describe a non-specific inflammatory injury that affects primarily the small airways, frequently not involving the pulmonary interstitium. Usually the terms utilized to categorize bronchiolitis are confused because they describe the clinical syndrome and also the histopathologic abnormalities. Unfortunately, most of the literature about bronchiolitis is based on isolated or small series. Additionally, there are many questions about epidemiology, pathophysiology, and treatment of bronchiolitis. The aim of this paper is to give a general view about the issue based on histopathologic features with the purpose of better understanding the clinical syndrome.

RESUMO

Bronquiolites ou bronquilite obliterante são termos gerais usados para descrever uma injúria inflamatória inespecífica que afeta primariamente as pequenas vias aéreas, freqüentemente poupando consideráveis porções do interstício pulmonar. Em geral, os termos utilizados são confusos porque descrevem tanto a síndrome clínica quanto constelações de anormalidades histopatológicas que podem acontecer sob variadas circunstâncias. Infortunadamente, muito do que tem sido descrito sobre bronquiolite na literatura baseia-se em casos isolados ou pequenas séries. Adicionalmente, a confirmação histopatológica do diagnóstico em muitos desses casos não tem sido descrita. Conseqüentemente, permanecem muitas dúvidas com relação à epidemiologia, patofisiologia, seqüelas e tratamento das bronquiolites. O objetivo desta revisão é fornecer uma visão geral sobre o assunto com base nos aspectos histopatológicos na tentativa de melhor compreender as síndromes clínicas resultantes.
